Abstract
Owing to the rapid development of the smartphones, various text-based messaging apps like WhatsApp, Facebook Messengers, are becoming more popular for users to carry out interpersonal communications. According to Alshenqeeti (2016), language is becoming terse, short and vital communication cues, particularly non-verbal ones were being lost, devaluing overall communicative ability. In order to tackle the problem of lacking non-verbal cues, such as the intonations and gestures during the speeches, emojis become one of the measurements to compensate the loss of physical cues during the text-based communication while Blagdon (2015) suggests “[...] can benefit majorly from some extra characters to show contextual information.” Emojis consist of facial expressions, common objects, signs and some other symbols. This project focuses on the use of vivid facial expression of emojis during the process of customer engagement since the understanding and interpretations of emoji might vary from person to person.
