Abstract:

Teaching should be more than imparting knowledge to students. Learning outcomes should be more than a list of topics to cover. So what’s left for teaching and learning? Let’s look at the outcomes first, shall we?

Outcome-based Teaching and Learning (OBTL) invites teachers to look at what abilities our students should possess, upon the module completion, namely the intended learning outcomes (ILOs). From there, we work backward to craft the assessment methods (AMs) that measure students’ achievement, and to design the teaching and learning activities (TLAs) that develop students’ capabilities. In short, a constructive alignment, should be formed among a module’s intended learning outcomes, assessment methods, and teaching and learning activities.

In this workshop, you will be able to:

  • understand the role of the intended learning outcomes in a constructively aligned module;
  • use appropriate verbs and sentence structures to articulate intended learning outcomes;
  • select valid and reliable assessment methods to measure the intended learning outcomes and provide timely feedback to students, and
  • design teaching and learning activities that develop students’ capabilities described in the intended learning outcomes.

Light refreshment will be served. All academic staff are welcome to join.
