The Second Talk of My Learning Story – Studying painlessly with endless fun

Event Highlights

The second talk of “恒學集”, or “My Learning Story”, on 4 November 2021 (Thursday) featured the Siu Brothers from the School of Translation and Foreign Languages, following the first installment of the talk series in April 2021.

Dr Ben Cheng, Director of the Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL), interviewed Dr Siu Sai-cheong (Associate Professor) and Dr Siu Sai-yau (Assistant Professor) on “studying painlessly with endless fun”. The brothers recalled how they studied in different disciplines and ended up mutually influenced and working in the same School. The audience found their unique and broad study interests an eye-opener. Learning is a real effort, but one’s mindset can transform it to enjoyment. Dr Siu Sai-cheong encouraged the audience that the fun of learning is to be discovered and the motivation be found. Dr Siu Sai-yau recommended changing one’s mindset for practically discovering the fun.

58 students joined the talk on site. The audience enjoyed the lively presentation of and the games guided by the speakers and the host.

“My Learning Story”, blends “HSUHK”, “HSU-ers”, “continuous”, “learning” and “series” into a bunch of Learning Stories. HSU-ers including staff (academic or administrative) and alumni are invited as guest speakers to give inspirations for what, why, where, when, from whom, for how long… and how to learn. It is presented as a series of talks for students, sometimes with related events in other formats. More talks of the series will follow in the Second Semester, Academic Year 2021/22.

Dr Ben Cheng (left), Dr Siu Sai-cheong (middle), and Dr Siu Sai-yau (right) chit-chatted with their learning stories.

Participants asked the Siu Brothers for suggestions on overcoming the hardship during learning.

We were grateful for the Siu Brothers’ support and stories!
