Designing Student-Centred Learning with OpenLearn Flipped Learning and Cross-Unit Innovation

“Designing Student-Centered Learning with OpenLearn: Flipped Learning and Cross-Unit Innovation” brought together colleagues from five units—Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL), Common Core Curriculum Office (CCCO), Information Technology Services Centre (ITSC), Library (LIB), and Student Affairs Office (SAO)—to share their innovative approaches to online learning. Held on 20 November 2025, the workshop highlighted the potential of the OpenLearn platform to support flipped classrooms, inclusive learning, co-curricular education, and self-paced learning.

CCCO presented their approach to designing a flipped classroom experience for CCC2000 University and Liberal Arts Education for Senior Entrants, showcasing how online activities were designed to provide students with a seamless digital learning experience that effectively supported the learning objectives and complemented their in-class learning.

Meanwhile, SAO highlighted their experience of incorporating AI Chatbot in the online course SAO1101 Diverse Learning Needs: Insights into SEN Characteristics, emphasizing the potential of this technology to facilitate self-paced learning by providing instant responses to questions about course content, SEN strategies, and best practices for inclusive education.

In addition, LIB shared their success in developing the online course AI Literacy Essentials and provided practical tips for maximising OpenLearn’s potential as a flexible and accessible platform for delivering impactful online education.

ITSC and CTL subsequently provided a hands-on demonstration of the technical setup of OpenLearn, guiding participants in creating online activities such as crosswords and interactive videos using H5P content. The session highlighted the platform’s practicality and dynamic features for engaging students. Furthermore, CTL discussed the key metrics available on OpenLearn for tracking students’ progress and engagement with course materials. These learning analytics equip module instructors with valuable insights into students’ learning patterns.

The workshop offered participants practical ideas and actionable insights for integrating OpenLearn into their teaching and training. By fostering collaboration across units and showcasing diverse use cases, the event demonstrated how OpenLearn is driving innovation and empowering educators to deliver flexible, student-centered learning experiences.
