On 12 February 2026, the Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) held a kick-off ceremony for the HSUHK Teaching Excellence Awards (TEA) Sharing Seminar Series, officiated by Professor Simon Ho, President of HSUHK; Professor Joshua Mok, Provost and Vice-President (Academic and Research); Professor Jeanne Fu, Vice-President (Learning and Student Experience); and Dr Ben Cheng, Director of the Centre for Teaching and Learning. The event was attended by nearly 50 HSUHK faculty and staff members.
In her welcoming remarks, Professor Fu emphasised the crucial role of teachers in students’ learning journeys. She stated, “At HSUHK, the commitment and collaborative spirit of our educators are key to driving continuous progress in teaching excellence”.
The sharing seminar, titled “Walking Beside My Students: A Journey of Partnership and Purpose”, featured Dr Janice Wong, a Lecturer at the School of Communication and a recipient of the 2024-25 Teaching Excellence Award, and was facilitated by Dr Ben Cheng. Dr Wong shared her teaching philosophy focused on cultivating empathy and partnership among students to break down barriers and create a supportive classroom. She also invited guest speaker Dr Victor Chan, Associate Director (Service-Learning) of CTL to discuss how experiential learning and Service-Learning projects can foster students’ personal growth and development.
During the sharing, Dr Wong’s students, Hazel Lau and Venus Law, both from Bachelor of Journalism and Communication (Honours), shared how they learned and were impressed by her teaching approaches, highlighting the importance of a teacher’s supportive role during their academic struggles and life challenges.
On the same occasion, Dr Ben Cheng also announced the launch of the eighth issue of “My Teaching Story”, featuring the insightful journeys of the four award recipients for the 2024-25 academic year: Dr Andy Cheng (Economics and Finance), Ms Chu Yau-mui (Chinese), Dr Valerie Tang (Supply Chain and Information Management), and Dr Janice Wong (School of Communication).
