Fostering Collaborative Learning: A Path to Student Success

Event Highlights

The Teaching and Learning Enhancement Section, Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL), kicked off the inaugural Global Perspective Seminar Series on Authentic Assessment in September 2024.

As we continue our path on engaging cutting-edge international insights from international scholars, we kicked off our Global Perspective Seminar Series for AY 2025/26. Our Section cordially invited Professor Parama Chaudhury, Professor (Teaching) from the Department of Economics and Pro-Vice Provost (Education – Student Academic Experience) at University College London to deliver a seminar on the topic “From First-Year Projects to Final-Year Conferences: Embedding Group Work and Peer Learning for Student Success”. Close to 20 teachers from different faculties and academic disciplines attended the seminar.

In an innovative approach towards education, a new curriculum-wide initiative was transforming the way students engage in group work and peer learning. The initiative started with a creative first-year group project, which was adapted during the COVID-19 pandemic to maintain collaboration and engagement despite restrictions. As students progressed through their studies, the programme evolved, offering increasingly student-driven learning experiences that emphasised ownership and responsibility.

The curriculum incorporated a narrative of progression that featured case-based learning and independent group research, culminating in a student-led research conference. This conference was co-developed with the student society, allowing participants not only to showcase their findings but also to hone critical skills such as teamwork, communication, and problem-solving—essential competencies for future careers.

In summary, the positive feedback from participants highlighted the effectiveness of collaborative learning in enhancing student satisfaction and academic performance. The initiative had successfully fostered meaningful collaboration, enabling students to tackle challenges together while building a strong sense of community. By sharing best practices and learning from both challenges and successes, let us reaffirm our commitment to preparing students for their professional futures through enriching collaborative experiences.

Professor Parama Chaudhury talks about the benefits of group work and peer learning.

Professor Parama Chaudhury engages the audience to brainstorm and share their input in the chat box on “What would your main pain points be to deliver group work for first year students?”.
