The launching preview of the VR exhibition, “Virtual Reality: The ‘Ten Courts of Hell’ of Tiger Balm Garden,” took place on 14 May 2025. Hosted by the Antiquities and Monuments Office (AMO) and co-organised with the Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) Virtual Reality Centre (VRC) and Hong Kong Chu Hai College (HKCHC), this event introduced an innovative immersive experience for the general public participating in guided tours of Haw Par Mansion.
The event welcomed 29 distinguished guests, including representatives from the Government, HSUHK, and the Aw Boon Haw Foundation. The preview began with opening speeches from Ms Bernadette Linn, JP, Secretary for Development; Prof Simon Ho, President of HSUHK; and Ms Sally Aw Sian. Following the speeches, guests participated in a brief introduction to the exhibition room, followed by a live VR demonstration and hands-on experience. This immersive session allowed attendees to engage deeply with the historical and cultural narratives of the former “Ten Courts of Hell” diorama from the Tiger Balm Garden.
Set to open to the public on 16 May 2025, participants of Haw Par Mansion guided tours can explore the intricacies of the “Ten Courts of Hell” through VR headsets. Visitors will not only view detailed murals but also interact with the virtual environment, gaining insights into the folklore and historical context surrounding this iconic site, complemented by an introductory video and exhibition boards.
Dr Eugene Wong, Director of the VRC, expressed gratitude to the sponsor, Aw Boon Haw Foundation, and AMO for their support. He stated, “This immersive experience will also allow visitors to appreciate the historical facets as a whole and participate in this digital cultural inheritance.”
The VR exhibition will be held at Haw Par Mansion, a Grade I historic building located at 15A Tai Hang Road, Hong Kong. To visit the exhibition, the public will have to join a guided tour of the Mansion, which includes access to this unique VR experience. Reservations can be made via the AMO website.
