Play to Learn, Game to Innovate workshop series: Using E-Games to Engage Students in General Education Subjects

The Centre for Teaching and Learning (Digital Learning Section) hosted the second session of the “Play to Learn, Game to Innovate with GenAI” workshop series, “Using E-Games to Engage Students in General Education Subjects,” led by Dr Zoe Xiao from the Department of Applied Social Sciences on 11 Dec 2025.

In this interactive workshop, Dr Xiao shared her team’s experience in designing a series of role-playing E-games for a General Education subject — demonstrating that meaningful game-based learning is achievable without advanced IT expertise. She highlighted how Generative AI played a facilitating role throughout the design process, supporting ideation, content development, and refinement of gameplay elements.

Participants had the opportunity to experience one of the mini-games firsthand, gaining insight into how role-play and game mechanics can foster student engagement, collaboration, and active learning. Dr Xiao also elaborated on how the game series was implemented within the curriculum and how student engagement was evaluated in the course.

The session prompted rich discussion among participants on the practical adoption of E-games in General Education, particularly around scalability, assessment alignment, and the pedagogical value of experiential learning.

This workshop further advanced the “Play to Learn, Game to Innovate with GenAI” series by showcasing how E-games and GenAI can bring creativity, interactivity, and pedagogical innovation into General Education teaching.
