Rethinking Assessment and Learning with GenAI: SSC Retreat Highlight

Invited by the Department of Social Science (SSC)

As part of the SSC Retreat, Mr Kelvin WAN, Digital Learning Specialist from the Centre for Teaching and Learning, was invited to deliver a presentation titled “Teaching in the AI Era: Empowering Students with Future-Ready Skills.”

The session moved beyond tools to explore how Generative AI is reshaping assessment and student learning. Drawing on recent research, Kelvin discussed the risk of metacognitive laziness when students over-rely on AI, and emphasised the importance of focusing on the learning process rather than just outcomes.

Highlights included:

  • The “chocolate almond” metaphor: surface learning as the outer layer, deep learning at the core, with GenAI as the blender.

  • A discussion on AI detection tools (e.g., Turnitin) and academic integrity in the AI era.

  • A case study from FIN1001, demonstrating how GenAI and game-based learning foster reflection and creativity.

The presentation sparked lively discussion, with many colleagues expressing strong interest in integrating GenAI into their teaching. Future collaborations are already being explored.
