The 2nd SCL Teaching Lab workshop, titled “Classroom Design for Student-Centred Learning,” was successfully held on 15 January 2026. Jointly organised by the Common Core Curriculum Office (CCCO) and the Teaching and Learning Enhancement Section (TLE) at the Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL), the event brought together keen educators to exchange their teaching practices and explore the adoption of student-centred learning in higher education.
The workshop featured Dr Lam Bick Har (Adjunct Associate Professor, Department of Curriculum and Instruction, The Education University of Hong Kong) as the distinguished guest speaker. Dr Lam, an experienced practitioner of student-centred pedagogies with multiple teaching awards, introduced the core principles underpinning student-centred learning from perspectives such as whole-person development and multicultural and identity formation. She highlighted autonomy, competence, and relatedness as three essential elements that nurture a supportive environment for driving learners’ innate potential to actualise.
Together with workshop facilitators Dr Christine Choy (Associate Director (Teaching and Learning Enhancement), Centre for Teaching and Learning, HSUHK) and Dr Wong Muk Yan (Director of Common Core Curriculum, HSUHK), Dr Lam led thought-provoking discussions on the potential tensions between learner-centred and standardisation-centred approaches, as well as the constraints and possibilities of different assessment and instructional methods. Dr Lam also provided practical advice and shared personal examples of facilitating collaborative activities and designing effective assessments that encourage students’ critical thinking and self-directed learning.
The workshop fostered inter-institutional collaboration and offered participants a valuable opportunity to connect with teachers from various disciplines. Through dialogue, reflection, and shared experience, participants were inspired to explore more inclusive, engaging, and student-centered approaches in their own classroom designs.
The facilitators, Dr Christine Choy and Dr Wong Muk Yan, engaged in a dynamic discussion with the speaker, Dr Lam Bik Har, involving the participants.
The participants engaged with the speaker and facilitators sharing their views on the potential tensions between learner-centred and standardisation-centred approaches.
