The Centre for Teaching and Learning and Graduate School host a workshop series on Structural Equation Modeling (SEM)

The Centre for Teaching and Learning and the Graduate School hosted a workshop series on Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) featuring the distinguished scholar Professor Cheung Wai Hung Gordon, Professor of Organisational Behaviour from the Department of Management and International Business at the University of Auckland. The series included an online workshop from 14-16 October, followed by in-person sessions on 22-23 October, during which consultation sessions were offered for colleagues to seek expert advice from Professor Cheung.

Online Workshop: Introduction to Structural Equation Modeling with lavaan (14 to 16 October 2025)

This series of introductory online workshops introduced participants to foundational SEM concepts. Over three days, attendees explored essential assumptions and intricacies of path models, learned to test mediating effects with bootstrapped confidence intervals, and conducted confirmatory factor analysis using the measureQ package to assess reliability, convergent validity, and discriminant validity. Participants also engaged in discussions about handling missing data and modeling observed variables, equipping them with practical skills to apply full structural models with latent variables in their research.

In-person Workshop: Testing Measurement Invariance and Moderation with R (22 to 23 October 2025)

The in-person workshop began with welcoming remarks from Professor Jeanne Fu, Vice President (Learning and Student Experience), followed by the presentation of a souvenir to Professor Cheung as a token of appreciation.

These sessions delved into advanced topics, focusing on measurement invariance and moderation effects. Participants learned to navigate measurement invariance using the MEI package and apply the modsem package for testing latent interactions through a structured four-step procedure.

This workshop series provided empirical researchers a unique opportunity to deepen their understanding of SEM and enhance their analytical skills. With lavaan emerging as a robust alternative to proprietary software, participants left better equipped to address contemporary research challenges.
