Designing Effective Poster Presentations with GenAI Workshops

On March 4 and 7, 2025, Ms Charlotte Lee and Mr Kelvin Wan, from the Digital Learning Section, conducted an engaging workshop for students enrolled in ASI1000 – Introduction to Asian Studies. The session focused on equipping students with the skills to create effective academic posters using Generative AI tools, fostering both creativity and clarity in their visual storytelling.

The workshop explored poster design principles in-depth, emphasizing content organization, visual hierarchy, and accessibility considerations. Through interactive demonstrations, students learned how to leverage AI-powered tools to enhance poster layouts, generate compelling visuals, and refine textual content.

A key highlight of the session was the integration of persona-based storytelling, where students were guided to adopt the perspective of a person born in 1980 in an urban capital of an Asian country. By aligning their persona’s life journey with historical, economic, and political developments, students developed a macro-perspective on national transformation and its impact on individual life chances.

The workshop also featured a live demonstration of AI-driven design platforms, including ChatGPT for content generation and Freepik for AI-assisted visuals, showcasing how AI can streamline the poster creation process. Participants engaged in hands-on activities, applying these insights to their poster projects.

By the end of the session, students had gained practical skills in crafting visually compelling, research-driven posters while critically assessing AI’s ethical and effective use in academic work. This workshop was a stepping stone in preparing students for their final group poster presentations, reinforcing the value of AI-assisted learning in higher education.
