From Sources to Insight: CTL Workshop Strengthens Students’ Critical AI Skills

As part of the Library’s AI Awareness Week 2026, Mr Kelvin Wan (CTL) was invited as a guest speaker to deliver a hands-on workshop titled “Gemini Notebook: Turn Sources into Insight.” The workshop aimed to help students move beyond basic AI tool usage and develop the critical judgement needed to work effectively with AI-generated information.

Rather than focusing solely on the functions of Gemini Notebook, the workshop addressed a fundamental question: Can we trust the sources behind AI-generated answers?

Through practical demonstrations and hands-on activities, participants explored three key aspects of AI-supported learning:

  • Source Credibility: Evaluating the reliability, accuracy and potential biases of information sources before using them with AI.

  • AI-Assisted Synthesis: Using Gemini Notebook to organise, summarise and connect information from multiple sources while maintaining awareness of their limitations.

  • Critical Judgement: Questioning AI-generated responses, verifying claims against original sources and making informed decisions rather than accepting outputs at face value.

The workshop emphasised that even when AI produces coherent and convincing responses, the quality of its outputs depends heavily on the information provided. Students were encouraged to take an active role in evaluating both the sources and the resulting AI-generated content.

By connecting practical AI skills with information literacy and critical thinking, the workshop reinforced the central message of AI Awareness Week 2026: “Beyond Literacy. Toward Fluency.” It also reflected CTL’s ongoing commitment to promoting responsible, meaningful and student-centred AI integration in higher education.
