Centre for Teaching and Learning hosts the HSUHK Teaching Excellence Awards (2024-25) Sharing Seminar III

On 28 May 2026, the Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) hosted the HSUHK Teaching Excellence Awards Sharing Seminar III, entitled “Ships & Legacies: Useful, Fun and Friendship”.  The seminar was delivered by the 2024-25 Teaching Excellence Awards recipient, Ms Chu Yau Mui, Part-time Lecturer in the Department of Chinese, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, together with her invited speaker, Dr Holly Chung, Senior Lecturer in the Department of English.

The seminar opened with welcoming remarks by the invited guest speaker, Ms Li Chun Hung, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Chinese. Ms Li praised Ms Chu’s long‑standing teaching philosophy that “Love comes before teaching” and highlighted how her rigorous yet flexible approach, together with innovative teaching practices, has strengthened students’ motivation and engagement in learning Putonghua.

The sharing session focused on three themes—Useful, Fun and Friendship. Through interactive group activities, supported by six student assistants who helped facilitate the games, participants were able to experience Ms Chu’s good teaching practice. Under the theme of “Fun”, Ms Chu invited Dr Holly Chung to engage participants in an interactive question‑and‑answer activity, highlighting the shared enjoyment and pedagogical connections between English and Putonghua teaching.

Towards the end of the seminar, Ms Chu reflected on Friendship, highlighting the importance of recognising individual strengths and mutual appreciation in teaching. She concluded with the Chinese proverb “casting a brick to attract jade”, emphasising that meaningful professional growth comes from educators learning from and inspiring one another.
