Abstract:

Since 2015, students are provided with innovative Virtual Reality (VR) Cave Automatic Virtual Environment (CAVE) to support their learning and practice their professional skills in HSUHK. The learning context covers a wide range of disciplines, including art, business, culture, finance, heritage, journalism, and logistics. Recently, the development moved from extended reality to cooperative VR CAVE systems for collaborative learning, which is the early form of Metaverse.

In this seminar, we are honoured to have invited two award winning teachers, who are going to share how the latest development of these VR technologies benefit academics and students as well as their experience with the implementation of Metaverse-based education and virtual reality technology in news reporting training and classes.

Speakers and Topics:

Dr WONG Yin Cheung, Eugene
Associate Professor, Department of Supply Chain and Information Management

Topic: Metaverse in education: from immersive experience to holistic learning

Abstract:
Universities worldwide start developing Metaverse for education to enhance teaching and learning experience, provide more space for education, customise individual training needs, and facilitating collaborative learning anytime anywhere. Moving from virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) to Metaverse-based education, the university could provide a more holistic approach with the use of the integrated technologies and platform for students to acquire professional knowledge and grow in a more balanced university life. The talk will share benefits of Metaverse in education as well as the developed Metaverse and VR scenes in The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) for academic learning content. The talk will also share examples and views on the use of immersive learning on general education and physical education.

Dr Wu Jing, Clio

Assistant Professor, School of Communication

Topic: Using VR Technology in News Reporting Training

Abstract:
Virtual reality, or VR, together with other immersive technologies have been widely adopted by higher education today to equip students with the knowledge and skills they need to better adapt to a more complex industry. To enhance the student learning experience and facilitate professional training in news reporting, the School of Communication, since 2020, has been joining hands with the VR Centre to develop a VR scene of a simulated earthquake scenario. More than 100 students have experienced the fun of VR learning on news reporting. This presentation will share the lecturer’s teaching experience, observations on the use of VR in training, and students’ responses to learning with this novel teaching method.
